that's just unbelievable, that those words came out of john mccain's mouth. >> is mccain bitter? i mean, mccain really went after him. it looked like hagel was caught off guard, like john, you and i have been friends for a long time. i did some good things for you. i supported you when i needed it. and you know i'm qualified for this job to be the head of the pentagon, defense secretary. it was almost like he was stunned by it. your thoughts. >> i think you're right. i think it was very personal. i was stunned by it, too. especially the way mccain kept pursuing it and pursuing it. clearly, john wanted chuck to say yes, i was wrong and you were right. and of course the verdict of history, as hagel tried to say, is still out on that. and frankly, in my view as a soldier, the surge had almost nothing to do with the actual increase in american troops. what it had to do was the coincidence of a number of things that were already moving in iraq. not least of which was the aw e awak awakening. and it had to do with very frankly a general by the name of david petraeus taking advantage of

and you have people like lindsey graham and john mccain who claim to be patriots who care about the pentagon and claim to care about the military, but yet they're really showing a lot of pique here. if we don't get what they want out of the administration on a completely separate issue they're going to penalize. they're going to penalize the pentagon. and that just to me is really not mature. it's not playing grown-ups. it's just using political leverage for your own hobbyhorse. and this is an issue that the president and others should try to take to the public -- >> my point in this is it could have been avoided. this is what elections are about. you get to be in a position to chait rules of the senate. you can't worry about the next senate. that's how i view it. and what could happen. the rules of the senate are not as important as running the country when we've got some critical issues -- >> i think that's a perfectly legitimate position to take, ed. and you know, i see it from both sides. but you know, harry reid decided not to go nuclear, which this would have been. and you know, that h

what is wrong with john mccain? ed, i asked the same question. what is wrong with john mccain? >> here are some of the benghazi questions mccain raised with david gregory. here it is. >> what did the president do, and who did he talk to the night of the attack on benghazi? and why was it? why was it that the people who were evacuated from the consulate the next day were not interviewed the next day? and then they would have known that it was not a spontaneous demonstration. why did the president for two weeks, for two weeks during the heat of a campaign continue to say he didn't know whether it was a terrorist attack or not? >> now, after classified and public hearings, are mccain and other republicans still not getting sufficient answers as you see it? >> i don't think so. i think they're just trying to make an issue out of this. i think this is all about trying to keep the president on the defensive. after all, he won the election and they didn't. i think this is all about trying to find time, delay, in order to find some kind of evidence that will keep senator hagel from bei

mccain called him out. lindsey graham called him out. >> mitch mcconnell has his own problems to worry about without calling out ted cruz, wouldn't you think, michelle? >> but the problem is the leaders of the party, even very conservative leaders are so incredibly cowed by their base. for a long time you had a party that very adroitly whipped up the frustrations and paranoia and suspicions of their base. they're no longer controlling the base. the base controls them. and so there is not much leverage they have over it. >> they have just enough control to screw things up so legislatively nothing gets done. that's about where they are right now. let's talk about another texan and louie gohmert. >> we have some people who think sharia law ought to be the law of the land and forget the constitution. but the guns are there. the second amendment is there to make sure all the rest of the amendments are followed. >> what about that, angela? >> well, first and foremost, i want to say that america is a land of laws.

john mccain was never a big fan of cpac and certainly didn't maintain much of a presence there. i'm not sure he spoke there in 2008 even if i recall correctly he did not. and i think that may have been a conscious choice on his part. i don't think it necessarily harms christie. you know, ultimately, i think that being in a position to go and speak to people at cpac does give you the opportunity to have a wider audience for your views and to make sure that conservatives are hearing it. and i think that's beneficial for conservatives. i think as joan said, it would be helpful at this point where i think there is a lot of concern about modernization within the conservative movement if we had as many voices as possible within that gathering. but at the end of the day, i don't think it hurts christie per se. >> very narrow right now. cpac has chosen that they will throw loyalists to the party right outside. it's now to me there is certainly two parties here. they're just by banner under one umbrella. let's go to sequestration. joan walsh, the president making a heck of a pitch. and o
